Hazardous Material Remediation and Building Demolition – Ashtabula, Ohio

At this former Union Carbide facility, STONE was contracted to assess and manage its potential environmental legacies. At the former administration building, STONE assessed the building for the presence of asbestos-containing materials (ACM), fluorescent lamp ballasts, mercury-containing thermostats, and Polychlorinated Biphenyl (PCB)-containing electrical equipment. STONE then developed demolition plans and specifications that included the removal of all hazardous materials followed by complete demolition of the two-story structure. Building utilities were identified and cut off. The building was removed to its foundation and the area graded and seeded.

At another manufacturing building on the property, STONE sampled dust on the building beams and rafters and documented concentrations of chromium and asbestos. Specifications were developed, a remediation contractor hired, and abatement proceeded. STONE provided on-site observation of the contractor and performed compliance sampling of the cleaned surfaces.
