Port of Cleveland Dock Rehabilitation Project – JMT – Cleveland, Ohio
A Port of Cleveland Pier showed evidence of significant corrosion of the steel piles in comparison to piles installed around the same time and in the same general vicinity of the project. Damage, including holes in the existing sheet pile ranging from several inches to feet in size, were visible during a scan and was verified through diver observation. It was speculated that the corrosion may be a result of interaction with the existing soils (fill) and possibly with water/biological growth. Geotechnical borings were performed, and as part of the geotechnical drilling, soil samples were collected for analysis for corrosive properties. STONE prepared the report summarizing the sampling activities and corrosion analytical results for soil, water, mud, and steel piling.
